We recognize that instructors benefit and thrive from sharing ideas with each other. The Communities of Practice (CoP) were created to build cohorts that meet during the year to discuss topics of interest. The goal is to build relations across the community, so every instructor feels supported.
CoP Groups 2025
This spring, we have three continuing discussion groups: Math Practices, Pedagogy in Physical Chemistry, and New Faculty CoP. Please read below for a description and click on the CoP of interest to sign up!
Currently led by Barbara Balko (Lewis & Clark College). The group's goal is to discuss pedagogy articles related to physical chemistry. This year, the group will be organizing pedagogy seminars open to the entire community. If you are interested in helping organize the seminars or would like to give a seminar, please sign up.
Currently led by Daniela Kohen (Carleton College). The group's goal is to discuss math practices and challenges in physical chemistry classrooms. The group meets regularly during the semester.
Led by volunteer mentors in the physical chemistry community. Workshops/discussions will be offered throughout the year, targeting issues that arise during the first years of teaching. Participants can select which workshops to attend/contribute. Senior faculty are also encouraged to sign-up to volunteer to lead a session.
Future Topics for Discussion
We support all community members who would like to start a CoP for discussion. If you would like to propose a new CoP, simply complete the survey below.
There have been many community members asking for a CoP to examine one-semester physical chemistry courses. From our initial fall survey, there is much interest in understanding better the content of a one-semester physical chemistry course and the impacts that a one-semester physical chemistry course has on the department curriculum. From the feedback, we also learned that a summer working group may be the most appropriate. If you may be interested in participating in a summer working group, please complete the survey below. We'll collect the information and share results in the next few months.
